How to Safely Decorate Your Garage Door for the Holiday Season

One of the greatest joys of the holiday season for many homeowners is decorating the exterior of their homes. The garage door is an excellent blank canvas with which to demonstrate your holiday spirit. As always, however, it’s important to make sure you don’t sacrifice garage door safety and security in the name of holiday cheer.

Remember your garage door is a system of moving pieces.

Though it may seem like a no-brainer for some, you must consider the fact that an overhead garage door consists of multiple panels that move on a track. You should not use any decorations that can jeopardize the function of these units together by obstructing the normal movement of your garage door panels.

Avoid strings and electrical wires.

Though string lights look beautiful, they can easily get caught between door panels or stuck in your garage door track. Any obstruction like this can lead to a broken garage door and can damage perfectly good holiday decorations.

Avoid adding too much weight.

An overhead garage door is sturdy and strong, but its functioning relies on a counterbalance between the door and it’s springs. While it may be tempting to stick a wreath or other, more weighty decorations on your door to spruce things up, it could seriously jeopardize the regular function of your garage door.
